Mini Mermaid Club Teaches Young Girls to Run

Featured article by Adventure Sports Journal

The Mini Mermaid Running Club, established in 2009 by the producers of the Mermaid Triathlon Series, provides young girls in lower-income elementary schools in Northern California the opportunity to fall in love with running and experience the satisfaction of crossing a finish line.

The program is free for young girls in 2nd – 5th grade and is made possible through personal donations and sponsorship. The MMRC program was developed through a collaboration of professional women in the fields of health, nutrition, education, fitness and mental health. The program addresses self-esteem issues through a thoughtful curriculum that helps them realize what their minds and bodies are capable of, regardless of their size, shape or ability.

This year’s group of girls will get the opportunity to experience crossing a finish line at the Mermaid Series 5k in San Francisco on Nov. 12.

The cost per girl for a six-week program is $45 made possible through donations. You can help make this program a success by sponsoring a Mini Mermaid. The Mini Mermaid Running Club is a 501(c)3 and donations are tax deductible. (more at Adventure Sports Journal)
